Project Designer (Intermediate)

Purpose

 

As an integral part of the project team, the Project Designer is a developmental role that provides design team support while actively learning and applying Bennett Design’s project processes—Discover, Plan, Implement, Monitor, and Close, including Pure Design™—with the high level of detail and documentation our firm is known for.

Over time, this role will begin leading small projects and taking on contract management responsibilities.

This position reports to the Project Team Lead Designer.

Role and Responsibilities

 

Project Work

  • Deliver team project goals through proficiency in the Discover, Plan, and Implement phases while gaining familiarity with Monitor and Close phases.

  • Assist with site verifications, working drawings, and drawing markups.

  • Complete project setup, ensuring AutoCAD drawings are site accurate and aligned with BDA standards.

  • Participate in initial concept development with the project team.

  • Assist with sourcing and ordering finishes, materials, and meeting with vendors.

  • Create working drawings, renderings, and final plans as required.

  • Attend team meetings and project kick-off meetings to gain a high-level understanding of project objectives.

  • Develop knowledge of d.i.g.™ principles, practices, and applications.

 

Contract Management

  • Assist with change notices, instructions, and subcontractor coordination.

  • Support shop drawing and deficiency reviews.

  • Assist with photo shoots related to project documentation.

 

Client Relationship Management

  • Provide day-to-day client contact, as required.

 

Quality Assurance & Compliance

  • Develop Building Code compliance knowledge and its application to various projects.

  • Learn to interpret regulations, procedures, plans, drawings, and specifications.

  • Gain an understanding of risk management principles as they relate to design projects.

 

Organizational Support

  • Comply with all BDA standards and processes.

  • Act as an ambassador of BDA culture and core values.

  • Support the Student Internship Program as needed.

  • Complete and submit timesheets weekly.

  • Attend all mandatory training sessions and company meetings (Bennett New Year, Town Halls, Performance Reviews).

 

Knowledge, Experience & Qualifications

 

Education & Certifications

  • Post-secondary diploma or degree in Interior Design from a recognized accredited college or university.

  • Studying for or has the NCIDQ Certification.

  • ARIDO membership (if applicable).

 

Technical Skills & Industry Knowledge

  • Developing knowledge of building code requirements, laws, and regulations.

  • Understanding of the interior design process from Discovery to Project Close-Out.

  • Familiarity with building systems, materials, and workplace strategy.

  • Learning principles of project budgeting and scheduling.

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or SketchUp/Vray and Microsoft Office applications.

 

Experience & Competencies

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in interior design.

  • Ability to organize and schedule tasks effectively.

  • Strong problem-solving skills with a "can-do" attitude.

  • Adaptable to changing priorities, deadlines, and directions.

  • Asks questions to ensure clarity and understanding.

  • Exercises a professional approach in communication.

 

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

  • Hybrid work model—remote work permitted under company policies.

  • Occasional travel required for site visits, measures, and walkthroughs across Ontario and Canada.

  • Must wear appropriate safety gear when visiting construction sites.

  • This role involves sedentary work, requiring prolonged sitting or standing.
